How your Climate can Impact Your Flooring

Many flooring options are available and there are different climates. This means that not all flooring materials will work in every climate. How can you decide which one is right for you? We'll show you the pros and disadvantages of each and walk you through them all.

Tile

It doesn't matter if it is porcelain, ceramic, or stone; tile can be used in any climate. It's durable and long-lasting. Tile can also be easily cleaned to make it shine again. The tile is both cool and water-resistant making it ideal for use in humid areas. You might prefer something warmer underfoot in colder areas. You might also consider the possibility of tile cracking if you live in an area that is susceptible to earthquakes.

Luxury Vinyl

Vinyl is available in tiles, planks, and sheets. Luxury vinyl mimics the look of wood or stone. It is extremely durable, easy to clean, and a little warmer than tiles. It's a great option if you want radiant heat underneath your floors in San Diego.

Carpet

Carpet is an excellent choice for any climate. A carpet is great in cold areas because the warm fibers insulate your home. It is like a blanket to your feet. However, if the climate is damp, these fibers can retain moisture which can lead to mold and mildew issues. Carpets need to be maintained in moister environments more frequently than other less absorbent materials.

Hardwood

Hardwood floors may not work in extreme climates. They can crack if the floor is too dry. If it is too humid, they may swell up or buckle. Hardwood floors are the most suitable for different climates. You can ease most of these issues with a high-quality sealant. Discuss your options with a flooring professional before you purchase hardwood. Different species and finishes may adapt to your climate better.

Laminate

Laminate floors are almost identical to real hardwood. Laminate floors are an affordable alternative to hardwood and require little maintenance. Laminate floors have the same insulation as vinyl floors so they heat up faster for your naked feet. You can add additional insulation during installation. However, if you live in wet areas, be aware that planks will expand and warp when water seeps into the joint between the laminate and wall. If this happens, the planks will need to replace.

You can ask your local flooring expert if you have any questions about choosing the right flooring material. San Diego Flooring is locally owned so you can trust that they will know the best flooring for your home.
