Fix a Drywall Crack

Apr 4

Do not panic if there is a crack in any of your drywall. Your house isn’t in danger of falling apart.

It is quite common for small cracks in the drywall to appear as a result of the house shifting. These cracks are easy to fix.

Instead of paying a lot of money for a professional, check out this comprehensive guide. It will teach you how to fix a drywall crack easily.

All the Tools You Will Need

Before you begin, make sure that you have the right tools.

If you attempt to use tools that are already in your house as "supplement instruments", you'll never get very far before you need to stop and purchase the right tools.

These are the things you will need to know:

  • Utility knife
  • 6-inch Taping knife
  • Mud pan: Although you don't need one, it can make it easier to attach drywall compounds to your taping knife.
  • Drywall compound
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Fiberglass drywall tape, on the other hand, is thinner and harder to fix visually. We will concentrate on paper drywall tape for this guide.

First

First, clean the crack. Grab your utility knife, and use it to cut any rough edges. Also, scrape out any material that is trapped in the crack.

Step 2

You can use a little of the drywall adhesive to tap the pan. Use a thin coating of the compound to cover the crack.

Step 3

Make sure you have enough tape to cover the crack. If you have a zigzag pattern, cut small pieces of tape.

Next, place the tape on the drywall compound. After applying the compound, you should apply the tape as soon as possible.

You may want to trim the tape if there is a long crack or irregularly shaped crack before you apply the compound.

Step 4.

Push the drywall tape in the compound with the taping knife

Be sure to check for bubbles. There will be a bump on your wall from air trapped under the drywall tape. Be sure to check for bubbles. If you find any bubbles,

Add another layer of compound to the tape. Wait for it to dry. Drying can take up to several hours, or even overnight.

Finish the job by applying for a second coat. Be sure that the compound edges blend with the wall. You should not apply too much compound to the wall. Otherwise, it may bump against the wall.

Once the second coat is dry apply the third and final coat. Once again, let it dry.

You can smoothen the drywall compound by using fine-grit sandpaper. Be careful not to sand the drywall tape.

You can paint the patch in the same color that you did the rest of your wall after you have finished sanding. You should use a primer.

If you do not, the color will not match your wall.

It's all it takes to fix a drywall crack

Waiting for all the layers to dry out is the most difficult part of this project. All the rest is quick and easy and does not require much effort.
